What will Melbourne be like in 180 years time?
In The Age on 30th of August, 2015, Katie Wong Hoy explored this interesting topic.
Melbourne celebrates its 180th birthday this week, and quite a lot has changed in that time. Take our population: 180 years ago there were about 177 people here. That’s grown to around 4.4 million. So we wondered: what will our city be like in another 180 years time?
1. We’ll be big. Really big.
If we keep at our current rate of growth (2.2 per cent a year) Melbourne’s population will, thanks to the wonders of compounding, reach an alarming 228 million in 2195. That’s 228,000,000 people. In comparison, if Sydney continues at its current rate (1.8 per cent), it will be a piddling 119 million people.
2. We’ll definitely be Australia’s Biggest City
Hypothetical and unlikely population growth aside, we still are currently on track to overtake Sydney by 2050. At current rates, Melbourne will have close to 10 million people, a million more than Sydney.
3. You’ll be living by the beach
… Because more of Melbourne will be underwater, or at least vulnerable, thanks to climate change. WIth the sea rising at the current rate of 3.2 mm a year, conservative estimates are that sea levels will be at least half a metre higher, which means low-lying areas of Melbourne will be vulnerable to storm surges
