Women work longer to earn same amount of Superannuation as men
I was fascinated to read the article by Westpac Bank’s Ruby Connection website on the 10th of December, entitled “Women Must Work 25 years More to Retire With the Same Amount of Superannuation as Men”. It highlighted for me, a busy working mum, the need to pay strict attention to my finances over the next 10 to 15 years as I want to retire at a fairly young age, or at least not have to work.
Of course, we all know that parenthood can significantly lower a parents lifetimes earnings. Periods of unpaid maternity leave mean no Superannuation contributions for that time. If you have two or three children this can make a big impact on retirement.
Gender imbalance of wages still exists in many industries as well, compounding the situation.
Plan for a comfortable retirement
If you want a comfortable retirement, you should start planning for that early. See a financial adviser, put plans in place and act.
