On December 3rd the former Richmond Fire Station at 131 Lord Street will be auctioned by Jellis Craig Richmond. Still standing in its original condition the Fire Brigade Station was designed by John Augustus Bernard Koch, an architect who practised in Richmond and Hawthorn and designed over sixty buildings for the City of Melbourne in his time. The Fire station was built and opened in 1893 and was technically advanced for its time, resembling the most progressive American fire service systems.
The building itself is a two storey, late Victorian red brick, domestic scaled building. It is quite simple, but is quite unique and prominent, standing boldly on the corner of Lord and Newry Streets. Unique features include the beautiful arched windows and obvious lack of an obvious front door on the main façade.
According to Jellis Craig, the property is 313 sq m in size and was decommissioned in 1966, but has been leased to Victorian Rowers since 1992. “The property remains in an original condition and is ready for a renovation and extension to become a premiere Richmond residence.” Ruby Koop tells me that she has many different buyers looking at buying this iconic property as it is zoned for residential use. It could be a fabulous home or possibly two apartments going forward and she is expecting over $2 million dollars to be achieved for the property at auction.
With some TLC this could really become a spectacular, one of a kind property. It really deserves a special buyer.
