Melbourne’s North East Link

By Janet Spencer

I thought you may be interested in the four proposed corridor options being considered for Melbourne’s North East Link.

North East Link is a new freeway to complete the missing link in Melbourne’s road network.

North East Link will finally connect Melbourne’s freeway network between the M80 Ring Road at Greensborough and the Eastern Freeway or EastLink.

Right now, North East Link Authority is preparing a business case and undertaking community engagement as the State Government examines the opportunities and challenges of the project.

Why does Melbourne need the North East Link?  According to the North East Link website:

Melbourne’s population is expected to hit 6 million by 2031 and could hit 5 million by as early as next year.
The highest growth will be in the outer suburbs.

Despite more people using public transport, by 2031 our growing population will increase the number of car trips by 25-30%.

The state government is of the view that without North East Link, pressure on already congested roads will intensify. By 2031 the average driver will be travelling further, on slower roads – up to 10% slower during peaks. Some roads are already as slow as 8 km an hour.

Without North East Link, people are likely to use longer detours to avoid clogged roads. This will push congestion into other parts of Melbourne’s road network.”

Specific information about the proposed corridor options can be found at North East Link

Corridor A is from the Western Ring Road at Greensborough and joins the Eastern Freeway near Bulleen Road.  This option will be approximately 11 kilometres long.

Corridor B is 24 kilometres long and would require Eastern Freeway upgrades, joining in at around Canterbury Road.

Corridor C and Corridor D are longer and join in between Canterbury Road and Boronia Road.  I can’t understand the value add of these options other than to divert heavy trucks.

The Government expects the project to take around ten years to complete, but it’s too early to determine the exact timing and that will be part of detailed business case development and planning during 2017. Planning approvals and procurement is expected to take place in 2018.

Its too early to tell how this may impact property in your suburb or any area that you may wish to buy in, however more research will be necessary before you commit.  This will be a big road and where it ultimately is built will impact property prices.
