REBAA AGM at Sanctuary Cove

By Janet Spencer

This year we held the REBAA AGM at Sanctuary Cove in sunny Queensland.

Thank you to the organisers for the great location, great food, and great company.  Over 35 accredited REBAA members were in attendance along with Associate members and we welcomed 3 new Affiliate members.  States represented included Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.  Member apologies were received from Tasmania, Northern Territory and Canberra.New Committee

The ” Brains Trust” was really engaging.  Facilitated by Scott McGeever from Property Searchers in Brisbane, Rich Harvey from Property Buyer in Sydney and myself offering a combined 75 years plus of real estate experience, it was really beneficial for young members.  Two sessions combined to about three hours spent brainstorming current practice challenges, recruitment techniques, changes in the industry, unlicensed traders offering property buying advice and much more.  Lively engagement from all attending suggests this will be high on the agenda for the 2015 AGM to be held in Sydney.

I would also like to thank Tim Lawless of RP Data for volunteering his valuable time to present statistical data and analysis on property , economics and demography Australia wide.  So much information for the Buyers Agents in attendance to digest.  Apparently he considers Brisbane is going to be the “place to invest” in 2015.  If you agree then you will need skilled, local and accredited REBAA representation and assistance.  Good think that I know a few dotted all around the Brisbane, Gold Coast, Towoomba and other areas in Queensland, so contact me for an introduction to the appropriate Buyers Agent to assist you.  Don’t forget if you are buying any where for investment or lifestyle purposes or moving interstate, you need to get help from the right source.

The selling agent is working for the seller not you.  Also, if an adviser is giving free advice, he is not working for you. Make sure your Buyers Agent or Advocate is:

a.  Fully licensed in their state by checking the government register,  here is the link to the register for Victoria
b. Is an REI member  – REIV for Victoria and similar bodies exist in other States
c. Has current professional indemnity insurance
d. Is an accredited REBAA member and
e. Has a demonstrated track record in buying the type of property you seek, be it a home or an investment.

Follow this advice and you should be on the right path to a successful property purchase.  Remember, there are many unscrupulous and  non-independent so-called advisers out there in the world of property and you need to avoid them.
